History

Built as a mausoleum to the Roman Emperor Hadrian in 139 AD, Castel Sant'Angelo has since worn many hats. Transformed into a fortress at the beginning of the 14th century by Pope Nicholas III, it then became a 'Papal party palace' complete with a 'Passetto' (papal escape route). Later it was a notorious prison and execution site, and now it is open to visitors as a state museum.

The Castel Sant'Angelo is the perfect place to understand Roman history through its architecture, with a layered structural history that dates back nearly 2000 years. The interior mausoleum offers the chance to admire perfectly preserved Renaissance frescoes and other art and artifacts. You can explore the papal flats and other rooms, and the exterior includes the gardens and terraces, which offer fabulous views out across Rome.

2. After purchase, please email [email protected] at least 3 days before your Castel Sant’Angelo visit to reconfirm. Please include:

  • Your booking reference
  • The lead guest's name
  • The names of all guests (and their ages if under 18)

3. On the day of your visit to Castel Sant’Angelo, please show your booking reference to the "Touristation” staff in front of the entrance of Castel Sant'Angelo (Lungotevere Castello, 50). The “Touristation” staff will be wearing red jackets and holding orange umbrellas. They will check your booking and give you your admission ticket to the Castel Sant’Angelo.

Please note: Castel Sant'Angelo tickets are not refundable. Your ticket for Castel Sant’Angelo is valid for one day and allows only one entrance. App-based audioguides are available to download for an added fee, but please bring your own device and headphones.

Opening Hours:

Tickets must be redeemed with Touristation staff at the following times:
November 1 – March 31: 09:30–12:00, and15:00
April 1 – October 31: 09:30–12:30, and 15:00–16:30

Note: the final museum admission is at 18:00. The museum is free to enter on the first Sunday every month. Castel Sant’Angelo is closed to the public on Mondays, 1 May, and 25 December. The Caffetteria Ristorante Le Terrazze at Castel Sant’Angelo is open during museum opening hours, from 09.00–19:30.
