Built in 312 BC by Appius Claudius Caecus, it operated as an important trade and military link between Rome and Southern Italy. With sturdy stone paving, drainage, and milestones, this iconic road witnessed historic events, serving as a path for triumphal marches and cultural exchange. It was fringed with impressive tombs and monuments, many of which still stand today. Our Purple Route travels along the Appian Way to the mysterious Catacombs of San Sebastian, where you can hop off the bus and take a guided tour, exclusively available with our Catacombs Tour Package ticket.
