Located in the heart of Rome, on the northern slope of the Capitoline Hill, the Monumento Nazionale a Vittorio Emanuele II is a large national monument built between 1885 and 1935 to honour Victor Emmanuel II, the first king of a unified Italy. This patriotic monument symbolises the Risorgimento, the period during which Italy achieved its national unity and liberation from foreign domination. Also known as 'the Vittoriano', 'Altare della Patria' ('Altar of the Fatherland'), 'Typewriter', and 'Wedding Cake', the monument is a grand neoclassical structure that features sweeping staircases, corinthian columns, fountains, porticos, colonnades and elaborate statuary. At the top is a panoramic roof terrace, ascended via a glass elevator, which offers incredible 360° views across the Eternal City. The actual Altar of the Fatherland is a large statue of the goddess Roma, situated on the first terrace after the entrance to the monument, just below the equestrian statue of Victor Emmanuel II. Beneath the altar lies the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.

History of the Monument
After the death of Victor Emmanuel II in 1878, there was an initiative to raise a permanent monument to celebrate the "Father of the Fatherland" and represent the unified Italy. Designer Guiseppe Sacconi was inspired by Hellenistic sanctuaries like the Pergamon, and wanted to create a new version of the nearby forum, a central public place that was open to visitors, a secular temple dedicated to Italy and its people. The monument was to reflect the status of as Rome a modern European capital, communicating pride and power, in the same way the Brandenburg Gate did for Berlin, the Admiralty Arch for London and the Opéra Garnier for Paris. Inaugurated in 1911, the monument features the sculptures of many established Italian artists, and the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, interred in 1921. Construction was completed in 1935.
